Dr. Ronald E. McNair Middle School's Hovercraft Team (Ibrahima, Aguib, and Tyler) and sponsor/ coaches Dr. Barbara Gafford- Hampton, and two of Fernbank's Scientists - Tonja Felton and Terri Brown won 1st place in the Hovercraft Competition - Fastest Speed and Qualifying Time. Dr. Ronald E. McNair was the only middle school there competing against Banneker High school, Chattahooche High School, Westlake High School, Alpharetta High School, Johns Creek High School, TriCities High School, Langston Hughes High School, and North View High School. The competition now in its 9th Annual Year gave kudos to the 6th grade team that came to compete, "Congratulations to 1st time entry McNair Middle School of DeKalb County for the fastest qualifying time of 14.84 seconds for the entire length of the competition course which is a new hovercraft record for the competition." Yes, months of designing, building, testing, and evaluating their hovercraft prototype really paid off for the team!
